- Hello Martin I'm really flattered you accepted to be interviewed for CoverMen Mag, just to start it off, though you're really well-known in the fashion industry, please give me some background information.
Hey! Thank you for giving me the opportunity for this interview! Here a little introduction of myself: I grew up in Mьrzzuschlag, a little town in the countryside of Austria. Since I was always interested in computers and informatics, I attended a technical college for programming and software development in a city close to our capital. After that I moved to Vienna and started to work in a company as a software engineer. I could never imagine to work as an international model back then and to be honest: fashion was so important to me, that my mom had to shop for most of my clothes. Obviously I still like to have my mom around when going for shopping, but today as a sponsor ;) Now I'm partially living in Vienna, but spend a lot of time in Milan, Paris, London and New York.
- How were you as a kid and what do you remember from your school days? What was your favorite subject?
When I was a kid, my favorite subjects were always physical education, mathematics and informatics – which is kind of a special combination. To be honest, the reason for PE was, because I was just "hiding" in the gym room with some friends and only started to work out when the teacher came in ;)
So I was kind of lazy back then and always spent a lot of time with computers. Things got a bit different: after school, I really grew into sports, which became a big part of me today.
- Let's look back at how you started modeling, tell me about how you got discovered.
When I moved to Vienna a few years ago, I have been approached over and over again by scouts who asked me if I could imagine to work as a model. At that time I had all sorts of other interests and without even thinking about it, I have always immediately rejected such requests. Until I asked myself "why actually?". Since I couldn't find a plausible argument, I decided to grab the next opportunity and took part at an open casting, found my way to my mother agency WienerModels and everything started.
- Do you still remember your first casting? What was it like?
I didn't really know how to be prepared for my first big casting. It was for the Armani show when I went to Milan for the first time. Since this is one of the most important shows, there were hundreds of Models waiting in front of the casting room to get inside. After 2 hours of pushing and waiting in the crowd, I finally managed to get squeezed through the door and did my casting walk in front of Mr. Armani. It was such an amazing feeling when my agency told me the next day, that I was booked for the show. I started pretty well for my first fashion week and also did shows like Dolce & Gabbana and Moncler. I definitely will never forget this moment when I walked out on the runway the first time for Armani.
-What are your favorite modeling assignments?
Every job has it's own interesting parts. For example I enjoy working with a lot of people for a show – you meet them again and again and become friends. Also it's always a great moment to go out on the runway, when the whole audience is looking at every single step you take towards the big wall of photographers. On the other hand I really love shootings. It's exciting to wait until the final product comes out and I can put the picture into my book or show it to my friends. It's good to have the variety and so far, I was lucky I got the chance to collect a lot of experience.
-How do you prepare yourself for a photography session? How do you usually spend the day before it?
Usually it's just a normal day for me - I keep on maintaining my lifestyle: eat healthy and do sports every day. Except, if I know it's going to be a body-shoot, I do an extra round of running to be "especially" prepared – but this is probably just for my mind ;)
-On the fashion industry: who are the people that you really loved to work with?
It's always a pleasure to work with Armani again and of course there are a lot of great photographers like Peter Lindbergh, Mario Testino, Steven Meisel, Steven Klein,...
-Tell me about your professional plans: apart from modeling, what else would you like to pursue or are you already pursuing?
I try to keep a balance between modeling, sports, software engineering and studying. The day just has 24 hours ;)
-What are some of your personal interests? What do you like to do in your free time if you have any?
Of course I love doing sports. It's a great feeling to go into the park or forest for running, having just the nature around me. I think your body and your health is the most precious gift you have, so I really take care about it. I like to cook, and much more I like to eat ;) I also spend a lot of time hanging out with friends and I really like to travel and see different cultures.
-Thanks Martin for taking the time to reply to my questions, it was a gift to me and my readers!
Thank you! I hope the readers will like it.
- Martin
